Overview
Finished in the fetching combination of Azurite Blue with a Mushroom leather interior, we have a remarkably well preserved 1996 Mercedes-Benz E220 convertible.
Having covered a very modest 49,000 miles and coming with a detailed service history, this is an exceptional car. It has always been garaged and judging by the condition of the underside and bodywork, has rarely seen rain, let alone suffered the indignity of salty winter roads.
Deserving of the full Remerxed treatment, this car has been reworked throughout and fitted with brand new MB Sportline suspension, including new shocks, springs and steering damper. With only 5000 miles covered over the last 18 years, we have conducted a full fluids service and fitted new tyres all round.

Exterior
Smoke Silver works so well on this car, matched beautifully with the beige ‘Sacco Planks’. The underlying metalwork is solid and unblemished with bright chrome work and the wire frame that holds the cap when you’re refuelling is still under the filler flap. All four jacking points still have their covers, and the original dealer name is remains on the window. There are no ripples along the flanks, and it still boasts fantastic shut lines. Being pre-facelift, this car wears a little more shiny chrome than later models and proudly carries the larger front radiator grill.
The headlamps are clear and equipped with working wipers to keep them clean. The Remerxed suspension treatment has included the fitting of new 17” x 7.5” alloy wheels designed specifically for the W124, together with matching Michelin Primacy 4+ tyres, sized to preserve the original rolling diameter. Carefully matched to standard springs, this combination enhances the sporting nature of the ride, while preserving the legendary Mercedes-Benz comfort. As you’d expect, the wheels are unsullied by parking scrapes and scuffs. With the marginally wider tyres and adjusted to sit optimally front to rear, it looks just ‘right’, effortlessly achieving a more imposing and sporting stance!
Interior
Unlocking with the factory remote key fob (driver’s door and boot lid), reveals that the W124 legendary resilience extends to the cabin. Everything presents so well it could be just a few years old rather than nearly 30.
The front seats are firm and springy and the leather bares only a gentle patina. Both front seats are heated, a feature that helps extend the potential for top-down motoring. The rear seats are in an even better condition and still look almost new. None of the four seats have any damage or colour loss.
Leather is used for insets in the door cards, as well as the pockets on the back of the front seats, pockets that have retained their elasticity and look terrific. There’s plenty of walnut wood veneer of course, and all of it is free of chips and lacquer loss. Wonderfully shiny and bright.
The carpets are in great shape with even the heel protector on the driver’s side remaining free of any wear and tear, no doubt a consequence of the protective over mats which themselves appear virtually new. Lifting the carpets, both in the cabin and in the boot, shows nothing other than solid metal underneath. The original Blaupunkt radio is still going strong and sits resplendent in the centre console.
The boot is very clean and shows the same lack of wear as the rest of the cabin. There’s a genuine Mercedes-Benz wind deflector in there for ruffle-free motoring at higher speeds, plus a full-size spare alloy wheel alongside the original factory tool kit, warning triangle and first aid kit.

The E220’s service and maintenance record is recorded in the original stamped service booklet, with the most recent including all fluids, gearbox and axle oil.

At Remerxed we’re a fan of the twin cam E220 engine. Giving up relatively little in performance to the 6 cylinder cars, it is extremely low maintenance and brings an eagerness to accelerate through the gears, while losing 100kg in the nose brings noticeable benefits through the bends. The 150bhp on offer is more than enough for modern traffic and in tune with the leisurely cruising that suits this car’s personality. The engine fires up on the button, idles perfectly, and, when revved, makes all the right noises. The coolant is bright and clear and the engine bay is as clean as everywhere else.
The underside is every bit as impressive, being clean and solid and still sporting its comprehensive factory underseal.
Summary
We have all the historic MOTs which as well as supporting the very low mileage, have never reported any corrosion, (or anything else of significance for that matter) being a long succession of passes. A testament to the W124’s reputation for longevity and reliability.
The recent Vehicle History Check is clear, and it comes with two keys, a huge array of expired MoT certificates and tax discs, the Mercedes-Benz book pack and wallet, the original specification sheet, invoices to confirm the quality of its servicing regimen recorded in the stamped service history booklet, and the manual for the original Blaupunkt Montreal stereo.
